During our annual spring donation drive, we’re featuring a free online film festival for you to enjoy! We continue our month-long series on the life of Douglas Fairbanks with another episode from the 2005 documentary film, “The Great Swashbuckler,” produced by Delta Entertainment with the assistance of the Douglas Fairbanks Museum.

Pt. 4 continues the story of Doug and Mary Pickford’s secret romance which culminated in divorces from their respective spouses and finally, a much-anticipated wedding in 1920. Examines the fabled Pickford-Fairbanks marriage and everyday life at their world-famous Beverly Hills home, “Pickfair.” Also discusses the formation of United Artists, which Fairbanks founded in 1919 along with Pickford, Charles Chaplin and D.W. Griffith.

Featuring rare Fairbanks film clips, photographs and other materials from the museum’s archives. Also includes interviews with museum curator and Fairbanks biographer Keri Leigh, film historian Sparrow Morgan, and Annette Lloyd of Hollywood Forever.

As part of our annual spring donation drive, we will be featuring a month-long series of videos profiling the life and art of Douglas Fairbanks here on the blog, posting two new episodes each week throughout the month of March. We begin with an excerpt from the 2005 documentary film, “The Great Swashbuckler,” produced by Delta Entertainment with the assistance of the Douglas Fairbanks Museum.

Pt. 1 covers the time period from Fairbanks’ birth in 1883 through his move to New York in 1901. Includes family history, information about his parents Ella Fairbanks and H. Charles Ulman, his childhood in Denver, and his first experiences on the stage. Fairbanks would soon leave Colorado for Manhattan to become a star of Broadway, a husband and a father.

Featuring rare Fairbanks film clips, photographs and other materials from the museum’s archives. Also includes interviews with museum curator and Fairbanks biographer Keri Leigh, film historian Sparrow Morgan, and Annette Lloyd of Hollywood Forever.

In His Own Words, the writings of Douglas Fairbanks compiled in a single volume. Pulished by the Douglas Fairbanks Museum.

"Douglas Fairbanks: In His Own Words," the writings of Douglas Fairbanks collected from the archives of the Douglas Fairbanks Museum.

* We’d like to thank the folks over at Forget the Talkies! for recommending Douglas Fairbanks: In His Own Words – a book recently published by the Douglas Fairbanks Museum, on their site.

In a review of Jeffrey Vance’s new Fairbanks biography, the reviewer recommends picking up a copy of our book instead, thanks to its’ first-person content (and comparatively low cover price of $23.95):

“That being said I’m glad to see a proper biography for Douglas. For those looking for something a little cheaper (and maybe even a little more interesting) for the holidays I’d recommend the much more reasonably priced “Douglas Fairbanks: In His Own Words“, a collection of writings and interviews with Fairbanks compiled by his museum. Its listed at $23 but several copies are available for $15. “

If you wish to purchase Douglas Fairbanks: In His Own Words, copies are available in our online gift shop, or through your favorite bookseller. The book can also be previewed for free at Google Book Search.

All proceeds go directly towards the continuing collection, preservation, and educational programs of the Douglas Fairbanks Museum. Thank you for your support!
